Project (block 1) - Objectives of the Project*

The site concerned is located in Comeana, in the Tuscan countryside, a small town part of the production system Florence-Prato historically specialized in textile production. These places have great historical and landscape value because they were scenarios of important historical events from the time of Etruscans, but currently lack a coordinating management by rendering it an excellent tourist place. The project area has a size of about 18 hectares, contains within it a factory dating back to the ’70 currently dismantled, the remaining land is used for agricultural purposes. The project aims to eliminate architectural degradation, environment degradation and social exclusion linked to the factory, as well as give a tourist reference to the whole area.
From the first project site visits, the landscape element that has most affected us was the division into longitudinal strips of land marked by rows of pine trees. From here is born the desire to develop a landscaping project strongly related to this pre-existence: long ribbons have become the territorial concept. We divided the land into 5 thematic ranges, assigning each a type of cultivation with the exception of the range that host the disused factory, which have restored the forest of which it had previously taken place. Starting from the north we have a range of olives, of arable land, orchards, vineyards, and finally that of the forest; each range has an architectural characterization as well as agricultural, in fact in the same order we have a press office, the agricultural training center, a showcase products, an exhibition center and a park in memory of the factory. In all ranges there are also houses and accommodation required by local administration, so that none area is zoned.

Project (block 2) : Progress, Methodologies and tools used for the Project*

We worked specifically in the strip of arable land and that of forest. The architectural design is inspired by the band of arable land with frequent changes of the trend level, a sort of tape that goes up and down located to the west band, it becomes a cover services as well as shelter and terrace on the hill, it generates an architecture that engages the undulating terrain and projects them into the structures favoring the east-west facing: his only stop is at the entrance to the farm belt. The functions housed in the strip are separated by large windows from the outside so as to be always in contact with cultivated. On the east end of the range, the tape becomes lighter and more integrated, a strip of vegetation that becomes cover for other services and theme gardens. Both east and west, flooring integrates with the ground: not to create a clear break with the cultivated, its design fades fragmenting gradually, and it penetrates into the crops made. For the range of the forest, we decided to return to the communities the forest of which the factory has taken their place. The entire forest range has different uses, there are indeed a forest-parking, set up a forest, a park in memory of the factory and receptive forest. As for the Memorial Park, we imagine to replace the old volume of industrial with a new volume of earth that uphold trees and shrubs, then we decided to divide it into many blocks, the who, moving up and down, go to acquire a different architectural function, we have also positioned within volumes of glass that contain cultural functions. In the receptive forest, we decided to placing tree houses that could be an alternative to conventional accommodation already available in other ranges.

Project (block 3) - Results *

Each architecture in this entire operation is characterized by eco-friendly materials. For the strip which lies west of the range of arable land has been developed a new coating ecological material: panels of G.R. (e). C., glass reinforced ecological concrete, in which was used the new environmentally friendly concrete characterized by the addition of titanium fiber in the compound whose function is to absorb the pollutants that come in contact with the material. The external paving is made from slabs of concrete ecological. The strip situated at east of the strip is characterized by the presence of vegetation in the roof and along the vertical walls of constructed volumes: this presence ensures optimal management of internal temperature and lighting.

The structure of the Memorial Park is in clay and wood and the volumes that host the cultural functions are made of steel and glass. For the tree houses we decided to use the wood from the pine trees would be felled for the realization of the whole agricultural park, for both the supporting structure and for the interior and exterior.
