Project (block 1) - Objectives of the Project*

The project is about how, Barrows of Trialeti, which were found in South Georgia and dated as first part of second millennial B.C., can become part of the new Barrow museum projected by myself.

The fact that barrows exist is still unknown for lots of people in Georgia. Over the years plenty of expedition took place in order to explore barrows. Among the expeditors was Boris Kuftin who took big part in understanding Barrows and he gave them just one culture and singled out two chronological groups: Old Bronze Age and Middle Bronze Age. Despite this, till today this subject arouses lots of doubts. In 20th Century 30’s and 40’s Kuftin was working hard and lots statues where found during his expeditions.

The Barrows where made for tribe kings or leaders. These barrows were magnificent and were usually built during the leaders’ life not after death. The roads that were found near the barrows were stone lining for process rituals, probably used for burial process.
It has to be noted how high was the level of architecture in the Middle Bronze age and the proof for it is the technique with which the Barrows where built, their aesthetical side and architecture. The Barrow itself is round lined with small basaltic stones. The tomb is placed in the centre of the Barrow and the burial hall is shaped as elongated square. Treasures where found in the Barrows which became not only treasure-house for Caucasian culture but also the treasure-house for the world’s culture

Project (block 2) : Progress, Methodologies and tools used for the Project*

The idea of my project is to try and built Museum of Barrows in Tbilisi. The museum will consist of 3 kinds of barrows which will give people opportunity to get to know not only the history of Barrows of Trialeti, but also history of barrows and chapels around the world.

The matrial used for the building will be concrete, glass and rusty iron, wich will give the museum look of heaviness, transparency and antiquity. The Barrows will be in the ground, architecture of it will not be change which will give people opportunity to capture the oldest culture.while exploring the barrows people get the feeling as though they just discovered this encient barrow by themselves. The barrows are representing the part of the oldest culture that is why this museum will be not only Georgian people but also for tourists around the world.

Project (block 3) - Results *

The location for the museum will be Digomi, where there is already an old building which is not functioning right now. It used to be place for water tanks which supplied new settlement for that time, than it became part of Tbilisi’s archaeological museum. In 70’s one of the tanks became exhibition hall. In my projected building it became exhibition part “Barrow” and also Tbilisi’s archaeological museum. Open spaces became resting places for guests, the big part of building became social and temporarily exhibition space. Also top floor of the building transferred into depots and laboratories.

The museum will be brand new built with modern standards
