Project (block 1) - Objectives of the Project*

"Green Axle" (revitalization of industrial areas)

During analysis of the Moscow general plan and a variety of industrial territories planed to be transformed in the future by government, we see tens of such "modules" located between 3rd and 4th Moscow transport rings.
Today these territories represent a huge ring of almost uninhabited, cluttered up earth which is used only on 15-20 %. This area looks like black stains rounding central city districts.
Considered industrial zones arose in Moscow basically in first half of 20th century. Railway presence since 19th century became a defining factor of an industrial ring formation. The fact that this area wasn`t private became a sourse of not systematic and thriftless use.
Railway plays a dual role. On the one hand – it is a powerful binding factor for this territories, on another – a source of ecological and transport problems. Today the expanded territory of the industrial zones “strung” on the railway is withdrew from a city infrastructure and turned to an insuperable barrier, so called “black ring”.
Railroad territories overgrew by “buffer zones”, where small, sometimes spontaneous industries are located. Having up to 3 km in cross-section, this territory has no street network. Pedestrian communications are defective too.
Considering all in above, this so called "median" part of Moscow has a huge potential.

The revitalization process of industrial territories consists of two basic stages:
1. Include the territories back to the current city infrastructure;
2. Intensify territories usage.
Main goals are:
-To structure borders of land tenure;
-To transform railway transport;
-Sanitation of territory with ecology restoration;
-Qualitative change of road and transport network;
-Reasonable functional saturation of cleared territories, which will have a prospect for intensification.

Project (block 2) : Progress, Methodologies and tools used for the Project*

For revitalization of railway territories and the territory of industrial facilities we need to do the following:

1.Cleaning of territory from unimportant buildings and parts of railway territiries with preservation of historically and architecturally valuable elements.

In the analysis of existing buildings, were found interesting architectural objects:

historic fantail-depo for locomotives, aircraft engines plant “Salut” and fruit and vegetable base.

2.Change of a transport infrastructure with creation of a new street grid having humane scale in cleared territories.

Railway freight transport should be redirected to existing circular railway , instead of transiting through the city center. We offer an additional line of light-metro, and transport interchange hub (distributing hard road and passenger flows).

3.Creation of landscape structure.

We offer to create the “green ring” for city. This ring can unite the separate parts of Moscow.

4.Workplace organization.

Modernization of existing industrial enterprises located near by and also creation of new manufactures, technoparks and office complexes.

5. Accommodation habitation

Revitalization solution supposes the design of new habitation forms. This habitation can only be a rent. At the same time city has a deficit of rent today.

We suggest a principle, which allows this type of habitation to be formed. Inhabited structures are offered for different levels of population who can rent this kind of habitation.

6.Accommodation centers for social and cultural purposes.

Absence or insignificance of cultural and social objects makes urban districts inexpressive and "dead". This project provides:

creation of the public area in the center of each recently developed quarter of rented habitation.

the reconstructed fruit & vegetable base will play the role of new public center.

Project (block 3) - Results *

«Dead” areas of not working industrial enterprises exist not only in Moscow. They are all over the world. This is a big problem in many cities.

This project can serve as a methodology for recovery of such places, their inclusion in the life of the city.

This will help to make life in the big metropolis nicer and more convenient for people.
