Workshop 1

Title: Touches of Reinassance

Abstract: Within the Project, architecture students from different countries will meet and work together in Florence, Italy, the cradle of the Renaissance. The aim consists in studying Renaissance architecture in this authentic place. The Project is thought to be going on for four years and will cover the period from 1400 to 1600. Each year it is devoted to half a century of the Italian Renaissance, and it is therefore divided into four parts: A(1400-1450), B(1450-1500), C(1500-1550), D(1550-1600). In this year 2008 will run the period C(1500-1550).
The project starts with the presentation of each country, which will introduce the studied period in their country by describing the national architecture in the period 1500-1550 and the influences of the Florentine architecture in the 19th Century.
The name, Touches of the Renaissance, is meant both literally and metaphorically: the students will draw and measure architectural details related to the respective period of time, and thus through “touching”, students will be able to perfectly understand the material, the scale, the space, and also the genius loci.
In addition, through mutual work students will make friends and come together with colleagues from other schools.

Organized by: Bohumil Fanta, Professor at the Czech Technical University in Prague, Faculty of Architecture, Czech Republic

Duration: 5 sessions of 2h30minutes, starting November 14th and ending November 18th

Participants requirements: students from the Master degree level, after the 3rd  year of study. Field of studies: architecture, visual art, art history. Skills and previous experience: drawing, art history, basics of monument preservation

Number of participants: 50, 30 places still available

Workshop 2

Title: An approach to the profession: Would you like to participate to an International Architectural Competition?

Abstract: Architectural competitions can be an important occasion to approach the professional world. Every day there are new competitions opened to architects from all over the world.
It is an interesting and fascinating world which gives place to the confrontation with the most famous architects of the world and also challenges the architects under different points of view.
The workshop wants, first of all, to introduce young architects to this professional practice also through the analysis of some projects with which Arch Piccini and his studio participated to international competitions, also obtaining important results. A second objective will be to choose an existing competition in which to take part as a group. During the second part of the workshop participants will work together on the preliminary ideas and the guide lines of the project. At the end of the Festival it will be possible for the teams to keep working from their country through internet. A third and overall objective is to facilitate the experimentation of team work. The planning work that will be done through the use of information technologies and internet will go beyond the wish to win the competition: it will be meaningful thanks to the possibility to work in an international team toward a common goal.

Organized by: Michele Piccini, Architectural Studio Archiplan, Florence, and Professor at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of  Florence - Italy

Duration: 3 sessions of 2h30minutes

Number of participants: 50

Title: What can neutrons do for you?

Abstract: This conference will present a new proposed technique for using sub-nuclear particles, the neutrons, for non-destructive characterization of metal historical artefacts.
This is based on a long established cooperation agreement between the National Council of Research (CNR, Italy) and the Science and Technology Facility Council (STFC, United Kingdom).

The first part of the Conference will be devoted to:
1-outline the scientific involvement of CNR, in particular with the Florence Research Area, in the field of diagnostics, characterization and conservation of Cultural Heritage artefacts.
2-givea short description of the properties of neutrons, and their importance in the scientific investigation of materials.
3-briefly describe the history and the intentions of the agreement between CNR and STFC, its scientific background, the opportunities offered to the Italian scientific community.
4-outline the possibilities for international scientific cooperation based on neutron techniques.

In the second part, the main characteristics of the Italian Neutron Experimental Station (INES) will be presented, as well as its properties and potentials for quantitative microscopic investigation of cultural heritage artefacts.
In particular, it will be shown how, with this instrument, it is possible to shed some light on how the artefacts were produced and what is their current status below the surface.
The results of these investigations are that they are totally non-destructive, add up to the traditional investigation methods to furnish invaluable help in any planned conservation work. Some examples will be discussed to show the main characteristics and to outline the potentialities of the method.

At the end of the conference, a sufficient amount of time will be devoted to a discussion. In particular, we plan to discuss the access possibilities for this technique and possible future cooperation activities that are expected to emerge from the audience.

Speakers: Marco ZOPPI and PDr. Francesco GRAZZI, CNR-ISC, Florence, Italy

Title: Design of contemporary city environment. problems of contemporary city environment, connected with more city defects.

Abstract: The main idea: Thriving urbanization, functional and space structure in cities tends to create problems for people and their orientation with their location. A high level of depreciation restrains the development of an urban structure. It’s necessary to change urban structure before one tries to accommodate it to a modern   lifestyle.Since industrial construction methods were based on  the standard planning and these techniques were widely spread, it caused a massive destruction  This mentality destroyed the unique  sights  and original landscapes of cities. The XX century has changed our conception of the environment and space. The new notion of the discrete space system appeared.  «Virtual reality» has great potential. The development of human engineering and nano-technologies has created the necessary prerequisites for highly comfortable urban design- which is space. Some new ideas on landscape design, not traditional landscape gardening.

Speaker: Yuri Nazarov, President of the Association of Designers of Russia

Title: Architectural conservation: between research and education. Research and educational issues in heritage education and heritage conservation.

Abstract: This interacive session provides a brief view of the interrelationship between research and education in architectural conservation, as based on the author's research, teaching and in-situ experience in this field. It suggests, explains and illustrates the structure and selected directions of dual-beneficial interaction between students/young graduates and experienced scientists in conservation of architectural heritage. The issues under discussion are addressed and illustrated against the background of contemporary Cultural Heritage conservation reality, which combines sciences with arts, and advanced technologies with traditional techniques.
The presentation is illustrated with relevant examples of the author's research, educational and in-situ conservation experience.
The educational methods proposed by the author are applicable not only for conservational students, but also for students in archiecture with a limited extent of conservation studies.
The way is shown of achieving a real contribution by architectural students to conservation of architectural heritage, which is in line with modern conservation principles.

Title: Real and Virtual – Art, Architecture and Archaeology

Abstract: The risk of the third dimension is to remain an interesting and effective spectacle and an immediate historical lecture.  Because of this, frequently the virtual reality is only viewed as a means of representation and it is easy to forget the fundamental contribuition which is to offer awareness and publication to the cultural and historical research.

TitlePaper Fashion

Abstract: The charm of paper: with a simple piece of paper one can think, fold it, cut it, crease it, one can project, one can create, apply, assemble, glue, one can give it a new life, a new meaning, one can construct,  one can sculpt, one can do wonders.
Paper has a creative strength of paper and an immortal soul that changes continuously, it recycles and revives always with a new form.
Paper is fragile and hard: paper comes from nature, paper is nature, but it can become robust like plastic (papier-mâché), layers can be overlapped and become an bearing structure, it can be folded with art and become a structure (pleating, origami, even become paper and cardboard made furniture)
And at the same time it’s fragility is fascinating: like chrysalis with insects, first with robust armor and after, fragile in regards to their form.
Expressing love for this material and for its natural origin… papyrus sheets as the first writing means in ancient Egypt. Other than this basic function of being used for writing and design and moreover by the press, paper, like the bark of a tree or the chrysalis of an insect, it also has the power to cover and therefore protect (even just by sight) the objects that it contents.
Giving attention to the small and humble things, “scruffs” from our ordinary life, also means to try to restore the soul of things, re-find “their identity”, redefine their sense and their value and to give a new identity to the little things from everyday (for example by using normal paper to give life to opulent and precious clothes for the night!)
And then considering the dress as the vessel of the body. A Sculptural Paper Dress like the chrysalis of an insect conserves the memory of the body. As a holder anticipates and suggests the form of its content and therefore intrigues, similarly also the dress is a holder.
And also clothing is a place where the body lives and expresses itself. Clothing as a precious hiding where identity and emotions can be hidden or, contrarily, clothing as a glorification of the body, underlining the same, and explicitly declaring its content: the body.
Importance of details: sometimes they are remembered more clearly then my art work all together, that’s why in my work there is a maniacal attention for the details.

Speaker: Caterina Crepax, artist and designer in Milan, Italy
